Deliciousness of Giving Back

By Christina Lawrence-Eklund

ImageDESIGN and Tangled Bobbin are excited to host the 3rd annual Feed the Kids Food Truck Fundraiser on Tuesday, June 13th. You’re invited to drop by downtown on 100th Avenue, between 100 and 101 Street, to buy your lunch by donation. All proceeds will be donated to school nutrition programs in the Grande Prairie Catholic and Public School Districts

The Grande Prairie Catholic School District’s Education Foundation provides over 11,000 emergency breakfasts annually to its students. In the Grande Prairie Public District, over 1100 students from only three schools use the nutrition program regularly throughout the school year. These nutritious breaks help kids concentrate better in class and can help them advance socially. Events like Feed the Kids are essential to bring in funds and increase awareness for programs in both districts.

For Margie and Marvin Dean, 20-year elk ranchers, foodies and owners of The Bugle Wagon, this will be their second time serving up burgers at the Feed the Kids Food Truck Fundraiser. They enlist help from their two grown-up daughters and a butcher from Beaverlodge who processes their meat. Margie says their unique product is what builds their loyal following: “There’s no other elk truck around. We’ve got a lot of people up here who like to eat meat; a lot of beef eaters.”

Marvin says some refuse to eat wild game, but many are compelled to try elk when he explains how the animals are leaner, grass fed and farm-raised. “Most people can’t tell the difference between a beef and elk burger,” he reveals. “I don’t think we’ve ever had one negative comment.” At this year’s fundraiser, the Deans will be serving elk cheeseburgers with caramelized onions, deep fried pickles and Margie’s twist on a kid-friendly classic: a deep-fried PB & J.

Last year’s Feed the Kids Food Truck Fundraiser was plagued with bad weather. Pelting rain and gusting winds of up to 80 km/hour made things challenging and chilly. As Marvin recalls, chuckling, “I can’t remember an event we’ve done when the weather was uglier.” The silver lining was that people braved the weather and came anyways, eating 428 meals and 350 cupcakes, ultimately raising an impressive $6,505. “That’s big hearts,” Marvin says. “For sure, we wanted to be a part of something special like that again.” And Margie agrees: “Any time you can give back is a good thing.”

Rain or shine, you can sample elk from The Bugle Wagon and goodies from other vendors between 11:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. during the 3rd annual Feed the Kids Food Truck Fundraiser June 13th. Wapiti Gravel Suppliers and The Downtown Association have generously agreed to offer financial support to this event, too. All money raised will be divided between the Grande Prairie Catholic and Public Districts for school nutrition programs. Taste a food truck lunch and savour the deliciousness of giving back.
